We mourn the untimely death of our dear clarinetist after 26 years in the quintet. Lars Kristian Holm Brynildsen, clarinetist in the Bergen Woodwind Quintet and principal clarinet of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, died after a brief illness in Bergen, Norway on August 17. 2005. A member of the Quintet for more than 25 years, Lars began his professional career as principal clarinet in the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra before becoming principal clarinetist of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in 1979. He studied clarinet at the music conservatories in Oslo, Norway and Freiburg, Germany in addition to taking private lessons in Paris. As a young musician he played in the World Youth Symphony. He performed numerous times as soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and also taught at the Grieg Academy of Music in Bergen. In addition, Lars served as Music Director of the Bergen Symphonic Band for many years. Lars is survived by his wife, Inger, his sister, Tone and his mother in-law, Maria. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and by all his colleagues in the orchestra and the quintet. 2005-2006 concert season to his memory. |
